Netherlands Circular by 2030 is a goal that Kolmer Electric Motors is committed to. "Sustainability is highly valued by us, but our customers must also benefit, that's Kolmer's philosophy," says Barry Grevengoed, sales engineer. "For this reason, we have developed Kolmer Top Coating, which guarantees a motor's lifespan to be extended by 4 times. Additionally, for decades we have been suppliers of Cantoni motors from Europe, known for their exceptionally high efficiency and the highest power factor of all electric motors. This combination results in significantly less energy and raw material consumption, making the electric motors quickly cost-effective and yielding substantial savings. Particularly in the water sector, we notice a strong demand for this combination," says Grevengoed.
The idea for a new coating emerged about seven years ago. "A customer who had to replace his electric motor every 6 months due to corrosion from saltwater asked for our help. He wasn't alone, so we developed a tough and wear-resistant coating. With this coating, the same motor has been running smoothly for 7 years. The coating penetrates through the paint layer to the metal, preventing moisture and dirt from penetrating even if the paint is damaged. This prevents the motor from peeling or rusting, extending its lifespan. Also, no toxic paint particles enter the environment."
The innovative coating is TNO-tested and is applied to Cantoni electric motors. These European motors have low CO2 emissions due to short transportation lines. An additional advantage is that Kolmer, in addition to its own stock of 20,000 electric motors, can also deliver quickly from the factory.
The key features of these Cantoni electric motors are their high efficiency and the highest power factor. This latter aspect is less known but can be easily understood with a glass of beer: the power factor represents the ratio between beer and foam. You pay for both, but you only drink the beer. The foam represents the reactive power that you pay for but that the motor does not use. In this case, the less foam, the better. In other words, the higher the power factor, the less (reactive) power the motor wastes.
Meanwhile, Kolmer has delivered many electric motors to various pumping stations, including the world's most sustainable Vissering Pumping Station in Urk. "The motors are robust, low-maintenance, whisper-quiet, and fish-friendly. The pumping system can pump a total of 2.4 million liters of water per minute from the polder to the IJsselmeer." (Editor's note: Zuiderzeeland Water Board) Governments aim to reduce raw material usage and increase energy efficiency. The Cantoni electric motor combined with the coating seamlessly aligns with this goal. Thanks to the significant savings, the purchase is quickly recouped, making it a legitimate sustainability investment for government agencies and sustainable companies," concludes Grevengoed.
